Dishonest, Perhaps Criminally So
I would not recommend them at all for buying jewelry items. They use AIG or GGL for appraisals, which "appraises" items on Invaluable Auctions under "Seized Asset Auctioneers" at hugely overinflated values so customers will think they are getting a great deal. Then when customers get a correct appraisal they are appalled at how little their item is actually worth. The Better Business Bureau says, "Complaints filed against this company include allegations from consumers that items offered for auction are occasionally offered for a price that is significantly greater than that determined by consumer's appraisers. The BBB questioned the company about these allegations and the company replied that they use a variety of different, independent appraisers." Ok, but did the BBB check out the one other appraisal company they use? No! It is GGL Appraisers, which has the exact same address as AIG. And it came out during the huge Bidz scandal (LA Times Oct 25, 2008) that AIG was the one doing the appraisals for them. "Bidz.com often offers buyers an "appraisal" of their item for a $33 charge. The reports are invariably produced by L.A.-based American International Gemologists, which acknowledged to the Los Angeles Times that it does not physically inspect every item for which it provides an appraisal."
